ViviBalls are CE certified, ASTM F963 compliant, and EN71 tested. All balls are made from BPA-free, phthalate-free, lead-free LDPE. Test reports are available upon request with every order.
We offer three standard sizes: 55mm (ideal for small home pits and sensory bins), 70mm (our bestseller for commercial playgrounds), and 80mm (great for deep pits and ball pools). Custom sizes can be discussed for OEM projects.
All ViviBalls are manufactured from 100% virgin LDPE (Low-Density Polyethylene) — the same food-contact-grade material used for cling film, food packaging film and squeeze bottles. No recycled content, no mixed materials. BPA-free, phthalate-free, and completely odorless.

Read Article →Choosing the right ball pit balls might seem straightforward — but there are actually several factors to consider if you want a safe, durable, and vibrant play space. Whether you're setting up a commercial indoor playground, a daycare center, or a home ball pit, this guide covers everything you need to know.
| Size | Best For | Coverage per 1000 balls | Age Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| 55mm | Small home pits, sensory bins | ~1.5 m² | 3+ years |
| 70mm | Standard commercial pits, daycare | ~2.5 m² | 2+ years |
| 80mm | Large commercial playgrounds, deep pits | ~3.5 m² | 1+ years |
Recommendation: 70mm is the most popular choice among indoor playgrounds. It's large enough to prevent choking hazards yet small enough for dense coverage. For deep ball pits (60cm+ depth), 80mm provides better float and visual impact. Browse our full product collection →
Ball pit balls are typically made from one of three plastic materials. We strongly recommend LDPE (Low-Density Polyethylene) because:

A common mistake is under-ordering. As a rough guide: 500-800 balls per square meter for a standard 30cm-deep pit (70mm balls). Check out our quantity calculator article for exact numbers.

One of the most common questions we receive is: "How many balls do I need for my ball pit?" The answer depends on three variables: pit area, desired depth, and ball size. Here's a complete breakdown with an easy-to-use reference table. View our ball pit ball sizes and prices →
Use this simple formula for a quick estimate:
Number of balls = Pit Area (m²) × Depth (m) × Ball Density
Ball Density = balls per cubic metre, loose-filled: 55mm ≈ 6,900 | 70mm ≈ 3,340 | 80mm ≈ 2,240
Example: A 3m² pit, 30cm deep, using 70mm balls:
3 × 0.3 × 3,340 = ~3,000 balls
Two standard depths, loose-filled. Weights are based on standard-grade 70mm balls at 5–8 g each. Commercial-grade balls (9–10 g) weigh roughly 60–80% more.
| Pit Size | Area (m²) | Balls @30cm | Weight @30cm | Balls @50cm | Weight @50cm |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1m × 1m | 1.0 | ~1,000 | 5–8 kg | ~1,670 | 8–13 kg |
| 1.5m × 1.5m | 2.25 | ~2,250 | 11–18 kg | ~3,760 | 19–30 kg |
| 2m × 2m | 4.0 | ~4,000 | 20–32 kg | ~6,680 | 33–53 kg |
| 2.5m × 2.5m | 6.25 | ~6,250 | 31–50 kg | ~10,440 | 52–84 kg |
| 3m × 3m | 9.0 | ~9,000 | 45–72 kg | ~15,030 | 75–120 kg |
| 4m × 4m | 16.0 | ~16,000 | 80–128 kg | ~26,720 | 134–214 kg |
Counts use loose-filled volume — the way balls actually sit in a pit — at 3,340 balls per m³ (70mm). Weight = ball count × gram weight (5–8 g standard grade). Gram weight changes what a shipment weighs and how the ball resists crushing; it never changes how many balls you need.
Need 20cm, 45cm or 70cm? Scale straight from the area. The formula is the same, only the depth changes:
Balls = Area (m²) × Depth (m) × Density
Write depth in metres: 20cm = 0.20 | 45cm = 0.45 | 70cm = 0.70
Shortcut — every extra 10cm of depth adds:
| Ball Size | Balls per m² per 10cm | @30cm | @50cm |
|---|---|---|---|
| 55mm | ~690 | ~2,070 | ~3,450 |
| 70mm | ~334 | ~1,000 | ~1,670 |
| 80mm | ~224 | ~670 | ~1,120 |
Example: a 4m × 4m pit filled to 60cm with 70mm balls:
16 × 0.60 × 3,340 = ~32,100 balls — exactly twice the 30cm figure, because the depth doubled.
Every table above uses 70mm, the commercial standard. Change the diameter and the piece count moves a lot: for the same pit, a 55mm fill needs roughly three times as many balls as an 80mm fill.
| Pit Size | Area (m²) | 55mm | 70mm | 80mm |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1m × 1m | 1.0 | ~2,070 | ~1,000 | ~670 |
| 2m × 2m | 4.0 | ~8,280 | ~4,000 | ~2,690 |
| 3m × 3m | 9.0 | ~18,600 | ~9,000 | ~6,050 |
| 4m × 4m | 16.0 | ~33,100 | ~16,000 | ~10,750 |
| 5m × 5m | 25.0 | ~51,800 | ~25,100 | ~16,800 |
| Pit Size | 55mm | 70mm | 80mm |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1m × 1m | ~3,450 | ~1,670 | ~1,120 |
| 2m × 2m | ~13,800 | ~6,680 | ~4,480 |
| 3m × 3m | ~31,050 | ~15,030 | ~10,080 |
| 4m × 4m | ~55,200 | ~26,720 | ~17,920 |
| 5m × 5m | ~86,250 | ~41,750 | ~28,000 |
| Ball Size | Standard grade | Commercial / heavy-duty grade |
|---|---|---|
| 55mm | 3–4 g | 5–6 g and up |
| 70mm | 5–8 g | 9–10 g and up |
| 80mm | 7–11 g | 12–15 g |
| Ball Size | Balls Needed | Standard grade | Commercial grade |
|---|---|---|---|
| 55mm | ~33,100 | 99–132 kg | 166–199 kg |
| 70mm | ~16,000 | 80–128 kg | 144–160 kg |
| 80mm | ~10,750 | 75–118 kg | 129–161 kg |
A heavier ball means a thicker wall: better spring-back under foot traffic, higher unit price, higher freight weight. It never changes the ball count.
For circular or irregular-shaped pits, use the circle area formula: Area = π × r²
⚠️ Measure the inner diameter - the space the balls actually fill. If you quote the outer frame of a pit with 5–10cm walls you will over-order: a 3m outer pit with 10cm walls is really a 2.8m pit, about 900 balls fewer at 70mm.
| Diameter | Area (m²) | 55mm | 70mm | 80mm |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.5m | 1.77 | ~3,660 | ~1,770 | ~1,190 |

When sourcing ball pit balls, the material is the single most important decision you will make. It affects safety, durability, appearance, and cost. Let's compare the four plastics commonly used in the industry — and clear up the one thing most suppliers get wrong.

Every ViviBalls ball is blow-moulded from virgin low-density polyethylene (LDPE). The reason is not marketing — it is how a ball pit ball actually fails.
A pit ball is a thin-walled hollow shell. In a commercial venue it gets jumped on, thrown, sat on and buried under, thousands of times a week. That kind of loading rewards flexibility and tear resistance, not rigidity — and that is precisely where LDPE performs best.
See our LDPE ball pit balls collection →
High-density polyethylene (HDPE) is a safe, food-grade material and we would never tell a buyer otherwise. It is what milk jugs, cutting boards and water pipes are made from, and a large share of the ball pit balls on the market are made from it. If a supplier offers HDPE balls, that is a legitimate product.
The difference shows up in how each behaves as a thin-walled hollow ball:
Verdict: HDPE is safe and widely used. Ask for the material certificate and check the wall thickness. We specify virgin LDPE because flexibility is what keeps a thin shell alive.
This is the part most suppliers gloss over, and we would rather be blunt about it.
When a ball is sold as "crush-proof", the property doing the work is almost always wall thickness — not the polymer. A standard ball has a wall of roughly 0.42–0.57 mm and collapses under an adult's grip simply because it is thin. A heavy-duty ball at 0.71–1.06 mm — that is, around 10 g and up on a 70 mm ball — springs back under the same load. Run the test in LDPE or in HDPE and the answer is the same: thickness is the hard lever, resin is the soft one.
So if crush resistance is your main criterion, ask for the gramme weight and wall thickness in writing before you ask about the resin. What the resin actually decides is the second tier of performance:
Those are the questions LDPE answers well, and they are why we specify it. Whatever ball you buy, make the supplier state the wall thickness on the quotation — it is the number that actually predicts how the ball behaves. Ask us for the wall-thickness spec on any ball we quote →
Polypropylene is safer than PVC and usually cheaper than LDPE, which makes it a common budget option. It is BPA-free and food-grade safe. However:
Verdict: PP is acceptable for low-traffic, home-use ball pits. Not recommended for commercial, high-traffic playgrounds.
Polyvinyl Chloride is the cheapest option — and that is the only thing going for it. We strongly advise against PVC ball pit balls for the following reasons:
Bottom line: if a supplier cannot tell you exactly what their balls are made of, ask for a material certificate. If they push PVC, walk away.
For anyone operating a commercial playground, daycare, or family entertainment centre, virgin LDPE is the material we recommend. At ViviBalls, every single ball is 100% virgin LDPE — no recycled content, no mixed materials, no shortcuts. Each batch comes with CE, ASTM, and EN71 certification documentation.
